a little bit about me

Every writer needs to have a cool little bio ready to go if they ever happen to get their work out there, right?

Well, maybe not. But I put one together anyway. I asked the rest of the creative team to write something about themselves too, but I haven't gotten anything from them. They are quite busy getting all that art and stuff done for Round 2, so I'll forgive them.

Brad Huffman-Parent has been writing for a long time. It started with very, very bad comics in Jr High and blossomed with his love of screenwriting in his early college years.

Due to extremely bad luck with computers, he has lost almost everything that was written between 1994-2006, including numerous short screenplays, one completed feature, and 2 features in progress. After a short break he renewed his love of writing in late 2007 and since then has completed 10 new short screenplays and begun 2 features.

His short screenplay “Losing Teeth” placed 2nd in an international screenwriting competition and “Because I Love You” received Honorable Mention in another.

“Losing Teeth” was recently optioned by an award winning director and is scheduled to begin production in late 2009. Another short screenplay “Giving Life” has been picked up by another director and is also set for production later this year. And finally, the short sequential story “Till Death…”, illustrated by Matthew K Grundy, has been accepted for publication in the anthology “Blister” from Tin Star Studios.

He is currently devoting every bit of free time to “Steel Rising”, his entry for the 2009 Small Press Idol competition.

All links in one convenient location

You may have already found us through one of these links, but here they are again so you can find all of them from here.

First off, here's our official Facebook fan page. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/pages/Steel-Rising/53524008534

Become a fan, add me as a friend. Tell your friends to become fans and add me as a friend. I'm nice, really, I am.

Next up, Twitter. http://twitter.com/BradHP

This is my personal account, but it's mainly used to connect with other creators and do some promoting for Steel Rising.

And there's also some new Twitter fun coming up once Round 2 of Idol goes live. But I can't tell you much about it until Round 2 starts due to the contest rules.

Well, okay, I can give the basics! All of our main characters will be getting their own Twitter and Facebook accounts (I think. That may be a violation of Twitter and FB rules, I need to look into that some more.) and I'm working out an alternate/side story that will play out for the characters on those pages.

Gotta love this age of the internet, where comics aren't just contained to the printed page anymore. And on that track, the creative team has recently been discussing adapting Steel Rising into a Role Playing Game as well, but that won't be until after the book is well under way. (and credit for that idea goes to our very talented inker Joe Armour)

Okay, back to the links...

And it's the last one? Thought I had more than that.

My deviantArt gallery: http://zeroice013.deviantart.com/

Check out some of the short screenplays I've written over the last year, and a few much older samples of my comic writing.

And that's it. Now it's time to grab that whip and go motivate the art guys to get everything finished up for Round 2 so we can blow you away with it's awesomeness.

Round 2 coming along nicely

Well, Round 1 is quickly coming to a close on March 20.

Not that we have to worry, since we sailed through with 3 very enthusiastic "Yes" votes! (Hey, I'm proud of our hard work, let me brag a bit.)

Submission of materials for Round 2 starts on April 1 and goes to April 19. Don't know when in there we'll send our stuff, but everything is going great right now so we'll definitely make it somewhere in there. No missed deadlines for us!

Round 2 requires turn-around poses (front, side, 3/4 view) of each main character, and also 3 action poses for each. We have all of our turn-arounds completed, and 2 action poses for one character and one for another. And Brad Thingvold might have more done that I just haven't seen yet. I have to say that these first 3 action poses have completely blown away any expectations that I had. I was impressed with Brad T's art from the start (or else I wouldn't have wanted to work with him) but he just took things to a whole other level.

The turn-arounds are off to the inking phase, but I haven't seen any of those inks yet (hint, hint if you're reading this Joe!).

And something that I'm really excited about, not just because I'm the one doing them but because I'm surprised at how good they look, are the character bios.

I always wanted to do something more with the bios than just a plain old word doc, and I think I found something that's really going to impress and stand out from the competition. Unless the competition had the same thought as me. I hope not.

Basically this old writer dug deep and found some artistic ability hidden down inside. Okay, maybe not much artistic ability, and maybe it's just that I'm good with computers and found my way around Digital Imaging Suite easily, but I like to think there's an artist in there somewhere.

But the point is, our Round 2 materials are going to blow you away. Keep your eyes open and I'll be sure to post when they're up for judging.

Remember, Round 2 is the fans chance to come and vote for us. We need you to win this thing!

...interupt our regular program for a personal announcement...

I have some updates for Steel Rising that I've been needing to put up this week, but real life came along and got in the way.

But in a good way!

I'm happy to announce the arrival of Adeline Elizabeth, who joined the family at 3:00AM on Tuesday 3/10/09.

And now those real Steel Rising updates will be coming some time this weekend, or whenever I'm not completely exhausted.

Round 2 update

Two more character turn-arounds done. One more to go,and then Brad T might go back and redo the first one.

Mike went ahead and threw some rough colors on two of them so far just for practice and they look great. Joe is working on the inks then Mike will go ahead with the real coloring and that should look even better!

So, one more turn-around and then it's time for the action poses. These are the ones I'm really excited about because I have some ideas that I hope will make these stand out beyond the average.

It's killing me not being able to share any more right now, but it's less than a month until Round 2 opens up for submissions. I'll update here as soon our stuff is up to view.
